Africa is more likely to have a vaccine for novel coronavirus at the first quarter of 2021 if the current vaccine trials in South Africa bear fruits. Confirmed by one of the professor heading the Oxford's vaccine trials, Shabir Madhi, said that the vaccine could be made available commercial as soon as the trials succeed hopefully next year.
The South Africa's vaccine trials which involved 2000 volunteers at the age bracket of 18-65 years, is expected to be monitored for 12 months after which its efficacy will be assessed. However, Shabir from Wits University has hinted that the results for the trials will be released by November or even December earliest.
Shabir has also claimed that they will test the vaccine's efficacy on at least 42 Covid-19 patients after which they will be monitored for a month or so. However, the biggest challenge will be producing billions of doses if the jab yields positive results according to Pontiano Kaleebu, director at Uganda Virus Research Institute.
On the other hand, WHO has urged countries to start boosting their public health system in preparations for the vaccine from Oxford that its results are expected this year's December. This is as result of the vaccine showing positive changes which means once available, there will be high demand from different countries that may make other countries to become unfortunate.
Oxford's vaccine is among the 17 vaccine candidates that have shown positive results on their trials. It was able to to reduce the severity of the disease on non-human trials in monkeys.
